A vegetarian by birth and choice, I watch for the green or red marks in buffet parties carefully. I once loaded some nice peach colored stuff onto the plate. My friend, a vegetarian by birth, but non-v by choice was watching me and asked me if beef was an exception! For the nice looking thing was that and some helpful waiter had 'by mistake' marked the dish green!!! Paavam cow, err... beef. It would've died twice!

While reading this, am reliving something similar that happened to me years ago at a Bengali boss' dinner party (at his house, for a successful project completion). The catering assistant was walking around with a huge plate of miniature paneer bajjis for appetizer and it was absolutely delicious. I was starving then and after eating a couple of those, I was craving for him to walk by our group again. And when he did, I happily took one of those bajjis and stuffed it in my mouth. One bite into it and it was unmistakably some kind of a fish bajji. Ewww.. I was in tears by then and couldn't find anywhere to spit it. You were lucky that you got to spit it out... but I had to swallow that damn thing not knowing where to spit it.. In those days they didn't have paper napkins at parties like they do now. I still think of it as a horrifying experience.
Born and raised a vege, I now (rarely) "taste" chicken out of choice but the fish bajji episode still makes me very nervous.

i am guessing you are online as i post this.. the second comment was basically noting that you were indeed biting into brinjals until you bit into that fish (which is what you claim. i mean eels and some reptiles also have same consistency. so if you say fish, i say fish. but then. if you say eel, it could be eel also. or it need not. i mean, the chef said it was just aubergines but it turned out not to be didn't it? i mean, you could take the example of my friend. he had a pancake with jam and butter at McD once. Only, it wasn't butter. It was margarine. Which is made of fishes' body fat. So what I am basically saying is, you never know. Things are not what they seem. There may be more to it than meets the eye. So on. So forth.)

I mean the second comment, I wrote, because I missed reading the word mix-up and assumed that you had simply ordered something that on the outset appeared to be a brinjal, but was actually something more sinister (which it could still be, considering everything i wrote within the previous brackets).

Ada paaveengala! You are making an entire mega serial out of a 5-second news clipping!

Whatever I ate - till 'that' bite - was certainly brinjal, for a placard did say 'aubergine'. Sorry to disappoint you :P
